Case Study
Improving Flight Display Clarity for Next-Generation Aviation HMIs
Background
Personal aviation flight systems, such as advanced jetpacks, demand real-time, zero-latency visual telemetry to keep pilots informed during takeoff and flight. Operating in extreme environmental conditions, these specialized flight panels require high-contrast visual displays that allow pilots to assess critical parameters at a glance without distraction or glare.
Application Characteristics
The pilot warning display automatically communicates dynamic flight data and system updates. This includes fuel load changes, exhaust gas temperatures, battery voltage, electronic control unit (ECU) health, and system calibration.
To support rapid pilot decision-making under intense operating conditions, the communication panel requires:
-
High-Contrast Illumination: Distinct visual signaling that remains sharp and readable in direct sunlight without causing glare.
-
Color-Coded Status Distinction: Intuitive color differentiation to immediately separate standard operational telemetry from critical warnings.
-
Wide Viewing Angles: Off-axis optical clarity so information is visible across a broad 160-degree field of view.
-
Isolated Board Architecture: Physical decoupling of the front panel optics from the internal PCB, enabling maintenance and board removal without disturbing the display panel.
Solution: LPC Rigid Light Pipe
Light pipes (light guides) transmit light directly from surface-mount or through-hole LEDs on the PCB to the front user interface. This delivers precise visual telemetry while providing design flexibility, multiple packaging options, and simplified assembly.
For this application, the design team specified VCC LPC Series rigid light pipes to deliver maximum light throughput and high contrast.

Key Technical Advantages:
-
Panel-Mounted Architecture: Secured directly to the display panel without mechanical attachment to the underlying PCB. This decouples the optics from the electronics, allowing technicians to install or remove the circuit board for maintenance without disturbing the display panel.
-
Optical Efficiency: Molded from optical-grade materials to minimize light attenuation, prevent optical bleeding, and eliminate display glare.
-
Streamlined Assembly: Engineered for quick insertion into panel cutouts, reducing manufacturing time and eliminating the need for complex mounting hardware.

Result & Benefits
By selecting the LPC Series rigid light pipe, the engineering team successfully delivered an intuitive, sunlight-readable communication display tailored for high-stakes aviation operations:
-
160-Degree Wide Viewing Angle: Delivers uniform visual signaling across a broad viewing angle, allowing the pilot to monitor status off-axis without distortion.
-
Sunlight Readability & Zero Glare: Precision-molded optical grade material maximizes light output while eliminating glare and cross-talk, ensuring critical alerts remain visible under direct sunlight.
-
Color-Coded Telemetry Matching: Seamlessly pairs with distinct LED colors to instantly communicate specific system health states such as fuel load, battery voltage, ECU status, and calibration parameters.
-
Simplified Serviceability: Panel-mounted design mechanically isolates the display interface from the PCB. Maintenance teams can inspect or swap the underlying circuit board without dismantling the flight display panel.
